Calidore String Quartet

After receiving some of the most prestigious awards in the chamber music field, the Calidore Quartet was signed to the Signum Classics label. The quartet has premiered new works from a range of major composers but also performs mainstream repertory. The Calidore String Quartet was formed at the Colburn Conservatory of Music, at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, in 2010. Its first recording, featuring quartets by Haydn and Mendelssohn, appeared on the Colburn School's own label. The group's name combines "Cali-," for California, and "doré," golden, referring to California's nickname, the Golden State. The members since the quartet's founding have been violinists Jeffrey Myers and Ryan Meehan, violist Jeremy Berry, and cellist Estelle Choi. The Calidore String Quartet enrolled in chamber music classes at the Reina Sofia School of Music in Madrid, Spain, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook; other lessons came from the Quatuor Ébène, the Emerson Quartet, and Guarneri String Quartet violinist Arnold Steinhardt, among others, Within two years, the group had racked up prizes at major U.S. chamber music competitions as well as the 2012 ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the International Chamber Music Competition Hamburg. Those were just the beginning of a string of awards and competition prizes, including the $100,000 grand prize, the largest chamber music prize in the world, at the University of Michigan's M-Prize competition in 2016, and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust in England, the same year; the Calidore String Quartet was the first U.S. group to win that award. In 2018, the group won an Avery Fisher Career Grant. The quartet has performed broadly across North America, Europe, and Asia, appearing at top-rank venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, and Kumho Art Hall in Seoul. The Calidore String Quartet has been a major draw on the festival circuit, appearing at the Verbier, Ravinia, Rheingau, and Mostly Mozart Festivals, among others. Signed to Signum Classics, the group released Resilience, its debut album on the label, in 2018. The year 2020 brought another thematic album, Babel, featuring quartets by Schumann, Shostakovich, and Caroline Shaw. The quartet has often performed music by other contemporary composers such as György Kurtág and Jörg Widmann. In 2023, the Calidore String Quartet began a cycle of Beethoven string quartets with an album of the composer's late quartets. After serving as artists-in-residence at Stony Brook University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Michigan, the quartet joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 2021.
