It's not entirely clear why Carl Maria von Weber's works for piano and orchestra disappeared from the general repertory. The two piano concertos perhaps don't equal Beethoven's, but the slow movements show Weber's characteristic ingenuity of orchestration, and the outer movements, written for the composer to perform, are brilliant and flashy. The most common of these three works is the Konzertstück in F minor, Op. 79, which is in a freer five-movement form and hangs together more convincingly. All three works have been in need of a well-recorded historically oriented reading, and that's exactly what they get here. Fortepianist Ronald Brautigam's replica (by Paul McNulty) of an 1819 Graf instrument is ideal; it has a sharp-edged sound that cuts through the orchestra, and the balance is admirably managed by Die Kölner Akademie under Michael Alexander Willens. Listen to the Adagio of the Piano Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 32, arresting from the very first. BIS does excellent work in the Deutsche Kammermusiksaal in Cologne, and in general, this is a recording that will fill many a hole in collections of Romantic concertos.
