Arrangements of music by Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg might seem a niche idea, but three of the four arrangements on this album by chamber group Het Collectief are not far separated in time from the original works. This makes sense, as Schoenberg and Berg worked at first in tight circles, not big, public ones, and they weren't always in a position to organize performances of larger works. What one will think of these versions may depend a bit on one's attitude toward the originals. Some may say the entire point of the string sextet, Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4, is its desperately overstuffed quality, but the 1934 piano trio version by Eduard Steuermann is a much lighter ride. Probably the strongest item here is Anton Webern's remaking of the Kammersinfonie, Op. 9, for the Het Collectief complement of winds, strings, and piano, matching the scoring of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, Op. 21; Schoenberg's quartal harmonies seem to snap into sharp focus here. Berg's Kammerkonzert for piano, violin, and 13 instruments was arranged by the composer himself and likewise clarifies its textures and procedures. The sole modern transcription is by Tim Mulleman of Berg's Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 1; the original is pianistic, and the transcription might seem a tall order, but Mulleman has clearly studied the other works closely. The work was recorded at multiple Belgian venues but holds together sonically. This can be recommended for aficionados of the Second Viennese School.
