Durant les nombreuses décennies de son activité musicale, Sting a toujours été impossible à cataloguer. The Police imprégnait son style propre de musique rock teintée de reggae avec des paroles à la sensibilité réellement littéraire. Ils ont rehaussé de leurs vibrations, de leur imagination et de leur intelligence le monde simpliste de l’arena rock et The Very Best of Sting & the Police représente leur travail avec des morceaux indéniablement classiques tels que "Message in a Bottle", "Can't Stand Losing You" et "Every Breath You Take". Tout seul, Sting a su pénétrer des royaumes encore plus exaltants, en assemblant un super groupe de jeunes musiciens jazz et en y infiltrant un rat de bibliothèque. "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" et "Englishman in New York" montrent un Sting plus suave et plus calme. Mais surtout, la collection fournit une vue d’ensemble de sa progression du maître d’école à l’icône du rock, pour revenir au point de départ.
