Deux Gallagher peuvent en cacher un autre. Non, Rory Gallagher n’est pas le frère, ni le père, ni même un cousin éloigné de Liam et Noel « Oasis » Gallagher. Mais pendant une paire de décennies (les années 70 et 80), le guitariste irlandais a marqué l’histoire de la musique anglo-saxonne, option blues-rock. Il débarque en 1970 au festival de l’île de Wight avec son trio Taste et sa Stratocaster vintage, pour remettre la pop music sur le droit chemin du blues. Ses premiers disques sentent un peu le patchouli folk-psyché en vogue à l’époque. Mais très vite, il va durcir le ton et simplifier le son – ou l’inverse. C’est un guitar-hero du peuple, en chemise à carreaux, qui use de sa guitare à la fois comme d’une hache et d’un fleuret. Un virtuose, mais qui connaît les vertus de la simplicité. Sa voix aussi est celle d’un grand bluesman blanc, qui connaît le pouvoir magique d’une bonne mélodie. Ce copieux best-of couvre l’ensemble de sa discographie, de Blister on the Moon avec Taste en 1969 jusqu’à l’hanté et magnifique Ghost Blues issu de son dernier album en 1990, en passant par une flopée de titres des années 70 – sa meilleure période. Au rayon rareté, on entendra une version graisseuse à point du (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction des Stones chantée en duo avec Jerry Lee Lewis alors qu’ils étaient en studio ensemble en 1973.
