Queens rapper Lil Tecca presents another fairly succinct bunch of formulaic commercial trap-pop on his third album, Tec, breaking off his now well-established melodic Auto-Tuned flows on 16 tracks that rarely stick around for more than two and a half minutes. Tec is light on features, with Kodak Black guesting on the ethereally produced "HVN ON EARTH" and Ken Carson duetting with Tecca on the driving album standout "Fell In Love." Tec's best moments happen when the production and songwriting try new things, as with the shifting beat and buzzy synths of "500lbs" and the interestingly chopped vocal samples incorporated into the beat on "Used2This." Even at their most adventurous, however, the songs blur together into an exhausting and forgettable whole. "Either Way" flirts with moody post-Drake late-night crooning, while "Need Me" almost bends a sample of the ubiquitous Brandy and Monica tune "The Boy Is Mine" into its funky R&B-informed instrumental, but aborts the mission before the song begins and decides to instead go with a loose approximation of the familiar groove. Lil Tecca remains an entirely serviceable rapper, and the production on Tec hits all the marks for disposable, easygoing mainstream content. What's lacking here is anything especially memorable or innovative, or even the echoes of charm and personality that seemed so abundant when Tecca first arrived a few short years earlier.
