Publié en 1969, ce deuxième album de Jethro Tull est marqué par un changement de line-up majeur intervenu juste avant son enregistrement. Le guitariste Mick Abrahams en désaccord avec Ian Anderson quitte la formation britannique qu’il veut ancrer davantage dans le blues rock, Anderson étant alors de plus en plus attiré par le folk rock mais aussi d’autres styles. Martin Barre le remplacera tout au long d’un disque totalement piloté par son chanteur-flutiste. Etonnamment, Stand Up reste très orienté blues rock et ce dès New Day Yesterday qui ouvre le disque. Mais le folk effectivement comme le classique (Jethro Tull revisite ici un certain Jean-Sébastien Bach !) viennent étoffer la palette sonore d’un album comprenant notamment We Used To Know, titre sans qui le célèbre Hotel California des Eagles n'aurait jamais vu le jour... © CM/Qobuz
