« Hi motherfuckers, did you miss me ? » Après le carton de son album Cuz I Love You en 2019, Lizzo revient pour combler ses frustrations avec Special, ode à ses fiertés, à ses affirmations. Elle semble avoir contenu sa rage durant trois ans, rage qui explose ici en mille morceaux. La chanteuse originaire de Detroit manie presque toujours le second degré ou la désinvolture si américaine. Et essaie tout. Le funk avec About Damn Time, produit par Terrace Martin, la soul acoustique avec Break Up Twice, produit par Mark Ronson et où elle se donne de faux airs de Bruno Mars, les rythmiques trap sur Grrrls… Tout est bon pour lâcher un « bitch » et rappeler sa condition de femme noire, grosse et gay, envoyée à la face de l’auditeur. Le morceau Special est un pamphlet à ces traits de personnalité qui sont en fait des combats. Cet album a quelque chose de joliment autocentré, et relève de la démonstration libératoire. Mais comporte aussi ses instants de gravité comme le très beau titre Naked, où Lizzo ne rit plus, ne toise plus, et se livre totalement. La production de ce Special est savoureuse, supervisée par Ricky Reed, ce dernier se chargeant du titre de clôture, Coldplay, en compagnie des excellents Quelle Chris et Chris Keys.
