Lorsque Wilko Johnson quitte Dr. Feelgood en 1977, il aspire à la fois à se rapprocher du mouvement punk et à être pleinement reconnu en tant que guitariste. Pour atteindre son but, il forme Solid Senders avec John Potter (claviers), Steve Lewins (basse), et Alan Platt (batterie), se réservant lui-même chant et guitare.
Après s'être fait la main sur scène dans les clubs, souvent aux côtés de groupes punk, Wilko Johnson sort en 1978 l'album Solid Senders. Guitariste impressionnant et chanteur honnête, il démontre qu'il peut tout jouer. Du pub rock bien sûr avec « Blazing Fountains » ou « Everybody's Carrying a Gun », du reggae avec « Dr Dupree » et un étonnant « First Thing in the Morning », qui évoque curieusement Dire Straits.
Là où le public aurait pu attendre du Dr. Feelgood passé à la moulinette punk, Wilko Johnson n'offre qu'un entraînant « Shop Around ». Pas d'hymnes immédiats comme « Roxette » et « Back in the Night », mais un « Burning Down » au clavier en folie qui vaut son pesant de boogie. Wilko Johnson n'a pas choisi la facilité dans une époque qui aimait la spontanéité et les raccourcis, et il le paye de l'échec de Solid Senders.
L'ancien guitariste de Dr. Feelgood n'aura pas de seconde chance. Artiste devenu culte, il continue avec acharnement de défendre un rock à la pureté prolétarienne, sans jamais chercher à mettre son talent d'écriture au service de la facilité d'un tube. Solid Senders et ses prestations scéniques toujours hallucinantes prouvent qu'il avait tout d'un très grand.
