Here's a body of songs that could spice up any vocal recital, not very well known as of the release of this album by English mezzo soprano Kitty Whately. The album presents the complete songs for mezzo -- five sets plus one freestanding unaccompanied song convincingly placed here as an overture -- of English composer Jonathan Dove, hitherto best known for opera. Some of them are quite sexy, and not only in the titular cycle to texts by Edna St. Vincent Millay. A few are deadly serious, such as the Cut My Shadow group to poems of Federico García Lorca. But all give the accompanist, here the exquisitely sensitive Simon Lepper, an equal role to the singer. Sample the fascinating conclusion to Time Being, one of a set of songs on texts by Ursula Vaughan Williams, wife of the composer and a noted poet in her own right. The music is not easy to categorize stylistically, but broadly it mixes the tradition of tonal English song with American influences from musical theater and beyond; listeners on the western side of the pond will find the songs of William Bolcom a useful comparison, and Whately seems to have the same kind of humor and empathy for the music that Joan Morris has had for that of her husband. With fine sound from the Champs Hill Music Room, this is a real find for song enthusiasts. The booklet text is useful, but the design entails tons of white space, and thus a page total that makes it hard to extract from the packaging without ripping it up.
