Why should anyone listen to this disc of Mozart's "Credo" Mass along with five shorter sacred works, including Ave Verum Corpus, with so many fine recordings of these works already available? Soprano Barbara Schlick is a wonderful singer with a warm, lyrical voice, but she alone is not reason enough to listen. Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff is a marvelous musician with a deep, dramatic voice, but alone he is not reason enough to listen. The Gürzenich Kammerorchester Köln is a serviceable enough ensemble, but it isn't reason enough to listen. Conductor Klaus Knubben is a skillful conductor, but he isn't reason enough to listen. Profil's undated recording is quite loud, but it is also much too reverberant and thus not always easy to listen to. The Limburger Dom-Singknaben is a pure, clear, sweet, light, and strong boys' choir, and its performances throughout are nearly equal to the best ever recorded. Is that reason enough to listen to this disc? Yes, is: try the choir's Ave Verum Corpus. It may or may not be the best ever recorded, but it is surely exquisitely lovely.
