The competition for the title of next new young phenomenon is keen, and Warner Brothers has thrown its lot in with the youthful-looking American pianist (and Harvard undergraduate) George Li, the silver medalist in the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition. Li gets enthusiasm points for the cover photo alone on this live album, recorded at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, and he gets more for the energetic, slightly capricious Haydn Piano Sonata in B minor, Hob. 16/32, that opens the show. The Chopin Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 35, is not quite so compelling; the famed funeral march slow movement seems to have little direction. Sample, however, various places in the Rachmaninov Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42. You'll hear the superb engineering work of Fedor Naumov, making Li's piano ring in the upper registers. And you'll hear technique on the level of the greats. You may want the album for this performance alone, but the Liszt Consolation No. 3 in D flat major and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C sharp minor also play to Li's strengths, which lie in executing difficult lines cleanly and adding tension in their middles. The booklet notes might have told us more (or anything at all) about this remarkable young pianist, and Naumov might have retained a bit of what was surely enthusiastic applause. But these are minor quibbles indeed about an exciting debut.
