Johnny fait-il vraiment partie de la génération perdue ? A cette époque, il a déjà tout du demi-dieu, à l’ouest de ses contemporains. La génération perdue est un de ses meilleurs albums. Le tandem Micky Jones et Tommy Brown, musiciens et arrangeurs des Blackbirds donne la « Johnny touch » à l’album. La génération perdue traîne d’abord dans un univers anglo-saxon, via un grand nombre de reprises : « Je veux te graver dans ma vie » (« Got to get you into my life » des Beatles), « Quand un homme perd ses rêves » (« When a man loves a woman » de Percy Sledge), ou « Le jeu que tu joues » (« With a girl like you » des Troggs). De cet album, il reste aussi des chansons autobiographiques, « Elle reviendra » (Sylvie ?) ou « La fille à qui je pense » (Laquelle ?). Entouré de l’orchestre d’Eddy Vartan, Johnny enregistre un de ses hits : « Cheveux longs, idées courtes ». Et des idées courtes, Johnny n’en a pas tant que ça. Il n’a jamais été un Cohn-Bendit en cuir, mais il écrit dans « La génération perdue » : « À ton père qui ne peut pas et ne veux pas comprendre / Il voudrait te voir derrière son établi /Un marteau en main toute ta vie».
