Les samples découpés bien nets, cette voix posée, grave sans être menaçante, cet accent anglais et cette fausse monotonie… Pas de doute, il s’agit bien de Loyle Carner. Avec son troisième album, intitulé hugo, le rappeur londonien continue de faire briller l’esthétique qui lui a apporté la lumière en 2017. Si l’eau semble dormir, méfiez-vous : cet album livre un propos politique bien affirmé. Notamment sur le morceau Blood on My Nikes qui traite des violences sociales et des règlements de comptes, de ces attaques au couteau qui gangrènent les banlieues anglaises depuis le début des années 2010. Loyle Carner explique sans détour que le problème est global, que l’inaction des gouvernements et les ségrégations qui ne disent pas leur nom sont responsables de la situation. Pas de chichis. Parfois, on entendrait presque Guru ressusciter à l’autre bout de l’océan Atlantique, comme sur le titre Georgetown. Loyle Carner rappe près de l’oreille, prend l’auditeur par le col sans le brutaliser, a conçu le son de son album avec une proximité et une intimité déconcertante. Il sait rapper la nuit, la ville le soir, restaurer les ambiances qui font la spécificité du rap londonien, comme Jeshi sait le faire aussi.
