Very intense indeed, the Lindsays' new disc of Haydn's three Opus 71 String Quartets continues a series of intense Haydn recordings stretching back to the early days of digital recordings. The Lindsays, with strong attacks, powerful rhythms, and flexible ensemble, have always been known for their extremely intense interpretations, and their Haydn performances have consistently been among the most aggressive recorded. This set of the Op. 71 quartets is as burly and brawny and just about belligerent. Sometimes, this leads to apparently unanticipated accelerandos, seemingly random intonation, and perceptibly haphazard ensemble. That all this makes the performance more exciting is undeniable: if the Lindsays' intensity takes them to places they never thought they'd go, imagine the effect on the listener. Whether all this makes the performances better or not is up to the listener. ASV's sound is vivid and forceful, but perhaps too close for some tastes.
