Virtuose de la trompette, Roy Hargrove forme The RH Factor avec lequel il sort un premier album, Hard Groove (2003), s'éloignant de ses projets précédents.
Révélé par le traditionnel The Vibe (1992) et salué d'un Grammy Award pour son incursion dans le jazz cubain aux côtés du pianiste Chucho Valdès sur Habana (1997), ce jazzman réputé tant pour son jeu énergique et volubile que sensible propose ici encore quelques ballades dans un style assez traditionnel (« Liquid Streets », « The Stroke »). Invitant le rappeur D'Angelo (« I'll Stay »), les chanteuses Erykah Badu (« Poetry »), Stephanie McKay (au beau timbre fragile sur « Forget Regret ») ou Shelby Johnson (« How I Know »), Roy Hargrove dialogue avec pureté sur ces compositions groove et nonchalantes, illuminées de la sonorité des claviers de Bobby Sparks.
Son style nerveux s'épanouit parfaitement dans l'urgence du style funk, avec ses nouveaux acolytes de The RH Factor, notamment le batteur Willie Jones III et le bassiste Reggie Washington (« Out of Town », « Pastor T »), sur lequel Common vient poser son flow rap sur « Common Free Style ». Sans être exceptionnelle, cette percée dans ce nouvel univers se révèle suffisamment réussie pour reconduire l'aventure sur Strength (2004) et Distractions (2006).
