Du haut de ses vingt ans et demi (à cet âge, six mois ça compte encore) l'Anglaise Gabrielle Aplin sort un premier album qui se réclame de la tradition folk de Joni Mitchell et Nick Drake. C'est d'autant plus osé que Gabrielle Aplin ne se contente pas d'être interprète et qu'elle compose la majorité du répertoire présent ici. English Rain possède le charme de la bruine du Somerset, ce romantisme mélancolique caractéristique de la campagne anglaise.
La seule reprise est évidemment sa version dépouillée de « The Power of Love » de Frankie Goes to Hollywood, le titre qui a lancé sa carrière. Autre titre phare du disque produit par Mike Spencer, « Don't Say You Love Me » caractérise mieux le style de Gabrielle Aplin, fait d'un folk léger et dynamique. Sa voix douce y fait merveille dans une composition toute en délicatesse. Gabrielle Aplin adapte parfaitement son ton aux thèmes de ses compositions, comme sur « November » qu'elle charge de quelques accents plus tragiques.
Seul le spectre du pop rock vient parfois obscurcir la belle tonalité générale d'English Rain, en particulier sur « Human » surproduit par Mike spencer qui a dû se croire à une session d'Ellie Goulding. Heureusement le naturel revient au galop avec « How Do You Feel Today? » et surtout « Panic Cord » aux allures de classique en devenir. Propulsée sur le devant de la scène à la rapidité de la fibre optique, Gabrielle Aplin a un certain mérite à ne pas s'être laissée submerger. English Rain n'est pas un album parfait et ses références paraissent un peu hautes pour l'instant, mais les promesses sont bien là.
Gabrielle Aplin respire le talent et le naturel, il lui faudra maintenant le courage de rester elle-même et de ne pas céder à la recherche de la répétition d'un succès foudroyant. Plus facile à dire qu'à faire, mais pas impossible au vu de son réel talent d'écriture.
