Le groupe californien a paradoxalement construit sa carrière en s’appuyant sur un humour pince-sans-rire parfaitement britannique : ce sixième album studio n’échappe pas à la règle, avec Train embringué, droit dans ses bottes, dans un supposé concept-album évoquant les routes ensoleillées de San Francisco et Los Angeles.
 
Mais, si l’on peut mettre en doute la sincérité du groupe (jusque dans l’évocation de chers disparus, contemplant la course du monde depuis les nuages du paradis, et toutes ces sortes de choses), sa capacité à régurgiter quarante années de tradition pop (la culture, pas uniquement la musique) en un flot, aussi anodin qu’en apparence excité, reste en tout moins admirable. Á l’exception de « Bruises » (car y intervient la voix passablement crispante d’Ashley Monroe), les douze chansons déroulent leurs fastes modestes dans le plus parfait anonymat. Cela dit, lorsque l’oreille tressaille, c’est pour se figer quelques mesures plus tard face à une trompette mariachi de carte postale (« 50 Ways To Say Goodbye »), ou pour sentir poindre l’indigestion (en ouverture, « This’ll Be My Year », surfant sur un inventaire à la Prévert, confine à l’outrage avec ses chœurs déterminés).

Manifestement conçu pour un public adolescent, California 37 rabote toute personnalité de Train, jadis combo inventif, mais désormais passant avec cynisme à la caisse de leur savoir-faire, et ayant vendu son âme aux diablotins du marché. Et, donc, sans surprise, cet album s’impose comme un disque séducteur, innocent, confortable, et facile. Et superficiel, et superfétatoire.
