Graham Ross vous invite à plonger dans cette vision très particulière des carols que nous ont offerte les compositeurs britanniques du XXe siècle, à commencer par le plus célèbre d’entre eux : Benjamin Britten. Autour de la très connue A Ceremony of Carols, on retrouvera de merveilleuses pièces chorales avec ou sans orgue, qui témoignent chacune à sa manière du soin méticuleux qu’apportait le créateur de Peter Grimes à ces Noëls (Te Deum in C, A Hymn to the Virgin, A Hymn of St Columba, etc.) issus le plus souvent de la tradition anglaise. Notez que Graham Ross propose pour Ceremony la version pour chœur d'adultes mixte élaborée au milieu des années 1950 par Julius Harrison (1885-1963), toujours déconcertantes pour les mélomanes qui ne jurent que par les versions avec "boys", autrement plus poétiques. Cet album vaut avant tout pour les pages ajoutées d'autres compositeurs, telles que The Holy Boy de John Ireland, ou encore le particulièrement beau This Have I Done for My True Love de Gustav Holst, où Graham Ross semble plus libéré que dans les Britten, où, certes, règnent d'encombrants et précédents modèles discographiques. Cet album reste immanquable néanmoins pour les amoureux de A Ceremony of Carols, l'un des très grands chefs-d'œuvre de la musique chorale, pourtant nombreux au XXe siècle en Angleterre. © Qobuz
