Enfant chéri des Florentins qui le reçoivent depuis si longtemps pour leur fameux festival du Mai Musical, Zubin Mehta a dirigé le cycle complet des Neuf Symphonies de Beethoven au cours de deux saisons en 2021 et 2022 dans la nouvelle la salle qui porte désormais son nom.
Si cette nouvelle intégrale enregistrée par la RAI (Radio Télévision Italienne) n’apporte pas de révélation, elle est le témoin du travail accompli depuis plus de 30 ans par le chef indien à la tête de l’Orchestre du Mai Musical Florentin et c’est à ce titre qu’on devrait l’écouter et la considérer.
Curieusement, les multiples relectures qui nous sont offertes depuis plus de 30 ans par les grands artisans d’interprétations « historiquement informées » ne semblent avoir aucune prise sur la conception de Zubin Mehta, plutôt tournée vers l'ancienne mode. Les tempi sont lents, l’orchestre est massif : considérons donc cette nouvelle intégrale avant tout comme un document et un hommage à un chef qui aura apporté une aura exceptionnelle à la ville de Florence. © François Hudry/Qobuz
