Quelque peu en avance sur les fêtes de fin d'années, l'ensemble vocal a cappella Voces 8 nous livre un album de Noël résolument british. En témoignent ces 15 pistes tirées de la tradition des chants de Noël sacrés britanniques, de Haendel au compositeur contemporain Bob Chilcott. Pour l'occasion, Voces 8 s'est adjoint la participation du Voces 8 Foundation Orchestra, ensemble instrumental né de sa fondation philhantropique destinée à l'éducation et à la démocratisation musicale. Le chef et compositeur américain ajoute également sa pierre à l'édifice - on lui doit une grande partie des arrangements des oeuvres présentées ici. Le résultat est très sophistiqué, imagé, cinématographique...trop peut-être ? Disons que l'équipe artistique n'a pas froid aux yeux et saute à pied joints dans le spectaculaire, à grand renfort de section de cordes et de cuivres. Les amateurs de musique plus discrète seront sans doute destabilisés, quoiqu'il en soit on peut difficilement empêcher de se laisser gagner par la grande joie festive qui émane de cet album. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
