Artiste de singles, Hank Williams a été tellement recyclé dans des compilations posthumes que cela en devient fascinant. Si l’on ajoute à cet univers où Best of, compilations et digests se partagent le marché, la fâcheuse coutume des ayant-droits d’autoriser le caviardage de certaines chansons par des ajouts scandaleux (en particulier des cordes en nuages de Chantilly), on est bien content que 40 Greatest Hits existe.
Cet album n’a certes pas la prétention de résumer une carrière aussi brillante que météoritique (comment pourrait-il en être autrement ?). Mais elle est riche d’une honnêteté rare : offrir les grands succès du bonhomme avec naturellement « Lovesick Blues » et « Jambalaya (On the Bayou) » en tête, quelques chansons moins connues, mais qui jettent un éclairage inédit sur l’œuvre de Williams, le tout sans duos post-mortem avec des membres de sa famille, et en version monophonique (c’est-à-dire dans le contexte où les sessions se sont déroulées). L’auditeur a donc rendez-vous avec l‘histoire. Et, en plus, il peut taper du pied.
A noter que c’est grâce à cette nouvelle édition que la chanson « Mind Your Own Business » parviendra au sommet des charts country en…1986. Et ça, c’est quand même épatant.
