Iain Quinn's 2018 release on Guild presents organ works by 20th century composers, performed on the Paul Fritts & Company organ of Pacific Lutheran University, and the program reflects various modernist ideas and approaches. Perhaps of greatest interest to organists are the three sonatas of Paul Hindemith, which not only represent the neo-Baroque "Back to Bach" revival that flourished in the 1930s, but demonstrate a clear understanding of the organ's traditional role as a contrapuntal instrument. Dmitry Shostakovich's Passacaglia was originally included in a scene of the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, and even though the composer had little access to organs or knowledge of their technical aspects, the piece is an intense psychological study and an exciting addition to the repertoire. Arvo Pärt's Pari Intervallo and Trivium are early examples of his method of tintinnabulation, a technique he derived from medieval organum to create a sense of stasis with slowly changing harmonies over a sustained line. To close, Quinn plays the quirky Tanz-Toccata of organist-composer Anton Heiller, a fun showpiece that is the most idiomatic of all in its colorful registration and virtuosic display. Guild's sound is quite clean and vibrant, and the organ sounds marvelous in the responsive acoustics.
