Figlia di un padre nigeriano e di una donna Rom di origine tedesca, Ayo all'età di 21 anni ha esplorato il mondo e si è trasferita a Londra. Ha richiamato l'attenzione su di lei sia a Parigi che a New York, quando ha aperto concerti per artisti neo-soul come Omar e Cody Chestnutt. È lei stessa l'autrice delle canzoni del suo album di esordio "Joyful" (2006), e ha conosciuto il produttore di Norah Jones, Jay Newland. Hanno registrato l'album per l'etichetta Polydor in soli cinque giorni. Il loro è uno stile musicale unico, che combina soul, world music e talvolta anche elementi rock (come nell'album "Billie-Eve" del 2011, che prende il nome da sua figlia), e che si è diffuso in tutto il mondo. "Royal", il suo sesto album in studio, è uscito nel gennaio 2020.
