Unhappybirthday

German trio unhappybirthday channel a wide range of post-punk influences, from darkwave to sophisti-pop. First appearing with the lo-fi noise-pop of 2012's Sirup, the group gradually refined their style from driving, hook-filled new wave to a more sensual form of downtempo Balearic pop with releases like 2020's Mondchateau. Singer/programmer Daniel Jahn and guitarist Tobias Rutkowski played in the Wismar, Germany-based minimal wave band goJA moon ROCKAH prior to forming unhappybirthday in 2012. Their debut album, Sirup, was released on cassette by Crash Symbols in 2012, and an expanded vinyl edition appeared on LebensStrasse Records the following year. An EP titled Kraken was issued on tape by Night People in early 2013. After relocating to Hamburg, the group released Schauer in 2015, again as a limited cassette by Night People, with an LP edition issued by Kingfisher Bluez in 2016. Kraken was given a vinyl reissue by Dutch label Wave Tension Records in 2017. Bassist Diana Kim joined that year, and the band moved away from their rougher, noisier early sound. Hamburg-based indie pop label Tapete Records released unhappybirthday's third album, the Jonas Meyer-produced Schaum, in 2018. Mondchateau appeared in 2020, again produced by Meyer and featuring guest vocalists Andreas Dorau and Zwanie Jonson.
