Still Dreams
Japanese duo Still Dreams create dreamy and romantic synth pop, channeling both the direct melodic sensibilities of New Order and Cocteau Twins' air of mystery. The group refined their sound over a course of various singles and expanded releases, reaching a new level of versatility on their 2021 album Make Believe.
Still Dreams was formed in 2016 by musicians and married couple Maaya and Ryuta Wachi when their band JUVENILE JUVENILE broke up. Still Dreams was a departure from the more organic and guitar-friendly dream pop of JUVENILE JUVENILE, leaning more into electronic elements like programmed drums and synthesizer sounds pulled directly from '80s acts like Human League and Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark. The duo released their debut EP, Theories, in 2018 and played their first shows the next year, expanding the lineup to a six-piece band for live performances. Second EP Lessons Learned arrived in 2020, and 2021 brought Make Believe, the most fully realized and wide-ranging document of Still Dreams' sound to date.
