Omri Mor

Early on, Jerusalem-born Omri Mor found himself drawn to a wide range of different musical styles. He studied classical music at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music, with teachers like Benjamin Oren, Dr. Assaf Zohar or the saxophone legend Arnie Lawrence, jazz piano with Slava Ganelin and Shoshana Cohen for classical piano. Since the age of 14, he has been a student of the oud player Nino "El-Maghribi" Biton, who taught him the fundamentals of Arabo-Andalusian music and Algerian Chaabi. He has won five substantial bursaries from the Israel-America Music Foundation. Omri performs with major Israeli jazz artists like Avishai Cohen (bass), Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Omer Avital, Eli Degibri and he collaborates with international virtuosos like Marlon Browden, Marcus Baylor, Philip Harper, Keon Harold, J.D. Allen, Jay Rodriguez, Marc Miralta, Raynald Colom and many more. He has also Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ra'anana Symphonette Orchestra.

He more regularly plays at jazz festivals in Israel and abroad, and he has frequently appeared with Israeli rock artists like Berry Sakharof and Micha Shitrit, as well as with musicians from around the world like Algerian rai pianist Maurice El Medioni and groups like the Maghreb Orchestra (led by Hanania “Nino El-Maghribi"), the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra and Lior Elmaliach.

The Algerian drummer/percussionist Karim Ziad was the artistic director in charge of recording Mor's first album It’s About Time! which is due for release in 2018, surrounded by an exceptional team: Avishaï Cohen on double bass, Michel Alibo on electric bass, and Karim Ziad on drums. While the repertoire here is mostly made up of new material that showcases Mor's great talent for composition, and his incredible sense for playing and melody, the piece Marrakech by Hamid Zahir brings us into new territory with its driving rhythms, and its piano that breathes swing and freedom...
