Expert Alterations
Baltimore jangle pop trio Expert Alterations were founded in March of 2013 by indie pop enthusiasts Paul Krolian (drums), Alan Everhart (bass, also of shoegaze band Wildhoney), and guitarist Patrick Teal. Heavily inspired by U.K. post-punk bands such as the Fall, C-86 bands including Close Lobsters, and New Zealand pop groups like the Clean, the trio gigged around their hometown, where Krolian curated indie showcase Baltimore Popfest, and played shows with Crystal Stilts, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, the Flatmates, and others. The group released a self-titled five-song cassette EP in 2014, and after going through multiple pressings, Slumberland released the EP on vinyl in 2015. Meanwhile, the band had signed to Kanine Records and begun working on their debut album. Working with producers Miles Waltuck and Dan Frome, the trio quickly recorded their songs, rarely going past a couple takes. Thanks to this brisk pace, the album was done in three days, though the mixing -- which was done by Velocity Girl's Archie Moore -- took a few months more. The finished product, You Can't Always Be Liked, was issued in late 2015.
