Emmy Meli

A songwriter with a confident, soulful vocal style, Emmy Meli began sharing her R&B-inflected pop songs to streaming platforms in 2020. Just a year later, her empowering "I Am Woman" (not to be confused with Helen Reddy 1972 chart-topper) went viral on social media, eventually landing on singles charts across multiple continents. A native of Long Beach, California, Emily Catherine Lomeli, who goes by Emmy Meli, was freestyling inspirational mantras, including "I am woman, I am fearless," while working on lyrics when she came across a drum beat by producer Okano on their video channel. She used the beat while continuing to flesh out lyrics during down times at her job at a golf course snack bar. Meli eventually posted a video of herself singing the resulting song's main hook to social media, and it quickly went viral, racking up millions of plays. She headed to the studio with Anthony Nguyen, and they added instruments including guitar, glockenspiel, and snare drum to Okano's beat. Arista and Disruptor Records released the completed studio version of "I Am Woman" in November 2021. It peaked at number 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, fared several spots better in the U.K. and Canada, and hit the Top 30 in Australia, New Zealand, and other countries.
