Dept

The South Korean producer and multi-instrumentalist Dept is a purveyor of calm and languid, beats-driven, R&B-infused pop. In his first six years as a recording artist he released no fewer than 70 singles or EPs, many housed in striking, consistently themed artwork from the likes of Ji Su Kim, Dang I, and Heesoo. The agreeable, relaxed tone of his material oozed with commercial appeal , which helped him secure a digital distribution deal with Warner Music in the early part of his career. Dept self-released his first single, the gentle, piano- and acoustic guitar-laden "Easily" featuring Taewoo Kang, in July 2016. The following year's "Think of You," a collaboration with CHILDIAHN, was a woozier take on streetwise R&B, which nodded to the path he would take in subsequent years. In 2018 and 2019, he collaborated on further singles with the likes of Chawoo & Choyoung, Artinb, and the Wayside Town rapper Jayci Yucca. 2020 brought his first EP, Fade Away, and that format soon became his preferred way to issue music. Three more EPs, High-Teen, A Thousand Miles, and Summer Blue, were released in 2021. Not only did this material bring his increased use of English-language vocals, but it also leaned more toward straight-ahead pop than his previous productions. By 2022, his catalog had achieved over a million streams, and he began to collaborate with a number of U.S.-based artists including Ashley Alisha and Kelsey Kuan on EPs such as May's Love Affair.
