David Watkins
The English cellist David Watkin was born in Berkshire and is an influential member of a group of classical musicians known collectively as the period performance movement. Based in London, the group are dedicated to the preservation of traditional classical music and specialise in playing early compositions faithfully reproduced on original period instruments.
Watkin studied music at Cambridge as a choral scholar and during his period there he studied cello under William Pleeth, the renowned cellist and chamber music specialist. During his time at Cambridge, Watkin became increasingly interested in the history of classical music and he is known to do considerable research into the music he performs. He performed his debut recital in 1989 performing at St. John's in Smith Square. Since then he has gone on to be lead cello in three well known period ensembles - Academy of Ancient Music, English Baroque Soloists and L'Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. Since 1999 Watkin has been a member of the Eroica Quartet, one of the world's leading period ensembles which is known for its for its sympathetic interpretations of music from the Romantic era.
