Brit Smith

Following a brief but successful career as a dance-pop artist, Brit Smith retired from the music business in 2013, only to mount a comeback 11 years later when her song "Karma's a Bitch" became an unexpected international hit. She was born in Wilton, Connecticut, on December 3, 1985, and made her acting debut on the soap opera One Life to Live when she was just six months old. Alongside her identical twin sister, Alexia, she continued to act and model throughout her childhood,. The siblings formed a pop duo called Brit & Alex in 2002 and scored a minor hit with 2008's "Let It Go," which reached number 75 in the UK and appeared on the film soundtrack to Step Up 2: The Streets. When the group split in 2009, Brit launched a solo career under the stage name "Matisse," making her official debut with the 2010 single "Better Than Her." A duet with Akon, "Better Than Her" reached Number 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay chart. Matisse's follow-up single failed to reach the charts, though, and her debut album was permanently shelved by her record label. Frustrated, she retired from performing until 2024, when the singer JoJo Siwa released a new single called "Karma." The song was an updated version of "Karma's a Bitch," a song Matisse had recorded (but never released) nearly a decade earlier. The success of Siwa's version ultimately led to the release of Brit Smith's older version, which reached number 40 on UK Singles Downloads, number 12 on US Digital Songs Sales, and 18 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Songs chart.
