Perché tutto questo trambusto? D’altronde, la band di New York produce musica da quasi trentacinque anni. La risposta è semplice: What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down? è senza dubbio il loro miglior album da molto tempo a questa parte! I Public Enemy non si sono limitati a creare un album di rap old school per i fan sopra i quarant’anni. In questa nuova opera, sono stati raggiunti da una serie di leggende della black music: George Clinton ha aggiunto la sua folle energia funk-rock a GRID (assieme ai Cypress Hill), i Beastie Boys e il trio rap-rock anni ‘80 Run-DMC ritornano alla grande su Public Enemy Number Won, così come il leggendario Ice-T e i PMD (metà di EPMD) in Smash the Crowd. Quasi tutti i brani hanno delle transizioni che eliminano le pause tra una canzone e l’altra, trascinando l’ascoltatore come su un treno in corsa (tranne per Go At It, feat. Jahi). Questo album è colmo di perle rap, dalla calma e malinconica Blackat (un omaggio a un amico defunto), al remix di Fight The Power, che riunisce un dream team gangsta con Nas, Rapsody, Black Thought, Jahi, YG and Questlove dei The Roots. Attingendo ai suoni old school (marchio di fabbrica della band) pieni di pesanti breakbeat e scratch, e combinandoli con un suono organico, i Public Enemy hanno prodotto un album completo e dotato di una urgenza appassionata, del tutto pertinente con il presente e tutt’altro che bloccato nel passato. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
