It’s rare for a band to bounce back from the departure of their singer, especially when their vocal footprint almost indelibly marks the group’s repertoire. Yet this is what Lonely the Brave have managed to do, taking this forced change as an opportunity to resharpen their focus and evolve their alternative rock by taking it to new, slightly more rhythmic lands. Despite its clear melodic elements and themes that made it a record truly marked by the stamp of resilience, The Hope List, released in 2021, didn’t have a fighting chance, just like so many albums released in the middle of a pandemic characterised by repeated lockdowns. What We Do To Feel therefore more squarely marks the British group’s return to the limelight.
Jack Bennett’s more raspy voice brings a raw quality that’s a touch more rock, accompanied by airy guitars that draw in equal parts from the sound of the late 90s and certain post-rock bands (the use of reverb and characteristic arpeggios require it). It’s also what the group could be criticised for, as the songs featured on this album may not touch one’s heart in the same way that they used to. Perhaps the musicians deliberately decided to redirect themselves towards a more open, stadium-oriented sound, unlike their first recordings which invited the listener to dive into deep auditory introspection.
The career of an ensemble like that of Lonely the Brave is marked by a number of milestones, some of them imposed by external forces. What We Do To Feel is proof that they simply had to get back out there and head in a new direction in order to avoid coming to a standstill, and to allow the musicians to keep moving forward after the loss of a member whose vocal presence was at the heart of their compositions. Less introspection, more openness, a choice deliberately made on an album that unmistakably harkens back to the sound that nineties kids were raised on: the collision of pop and feverish rock. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
