Già con Luminous, non si poteva rimproverare ai The Horrors di adagiarsi sugli allori. A differenza di tante band simili, ogni album di questo gruppo originario di Southend lasciava a bocca aperta i fan per i suoi cambiamenti di rotta. Con questo quarto opus apparso nel 2014, gli inglesi sfornavano un disco omogeneo nonostante la miriade di stili pescati qua e là: psichedelica, new wave, shoegaze, goth, krautrock e persino elettronica. Tre anni dopo, V conserva questo eclettismo proiettandolo su un terreno più pop. Perché, ormai dodicenni, i The Horrors hanno fame! Usciti dalla penombra dell'underground, Faris Badwan e compagni vogliono assaporare la sensazione di stare in cima alle classifiche. Ma se questo quinto album vince la sua scommessa è proprio per la sua capacità di giocare la carta commerciale senza perdere la sua identità. No, i The Horrors non hanno venduto l'anima al diavolo, ma affinano ritornelli e melodie, smussano certi angoli chitarristici e consolidano il potenziale stiloso della loro musica per partorire un disco che a sprazzi ricorda Bowie. Gli amanti delle etichette lo definiranno un album della maturità. Gli altri, giusto un ottimo disco rock ben costruito. © MD/Qobuz
