Davvero un Long, Long, Long Time… A parte per una serie di concerti, non sentivamo parlare di Curt Smith e Roland Orzabal dal 2004! Senza alcuna premura e come due adolescenti che amano strimpellare le chitarre nell’intimità della loro camera da letto, questi affascinanti sessantenni hanno finalmente riscoperto il gusto della creazione musicale. La band, i cui successi più famosi sono stati pubblicati molto tempo fa (Mad World nel 1982, Shout nel 1984 e Everybody Wants To Rule The World nel 1985), con la loro nuova opera del 2022, The Tipping Point, esordiscono con un brano che sembra allontanarsi dalla new wave di cui sono uno degli emblemi: No Small Thing inizia quasi come una canzone leggera per chitarra acustica e fisarmonica, prima che le chitarre elettriche e l’organo facciano decollare il brano verso una certa portata lirica. Tutte le altre tracce di quello che è il settimo album del duo sono caratterizzate da un’estetica pop più diretta, con echi occasionali del loro periodo d’oro degli anni '80 (The Tipping Point suona molto TFF con quella tipica atmosfera malinconica e orecchiabile). Il pop gode di un trattamento electro in canzoni come End Of Night o My Demons, mentre Curt e Roland si cimentano nello slow e nella ballata con Rivers Of Mercy, Please Be Happy e Master Plan. I due inglesi restano quindi fedeli a loro stessi e perseguono la strada tracciata anni fa con onestà e sincerità, senza cercare di riprodurre a tutti i costi ciò che ha fatto il loro successo nel passato. E quando abbracciano lo zeitgeist, come nel caso del brano femminista Break The Man (come nel 1989 con Woman In Chains e il featuring di Oleta Adams) lo fanno sempre nel loro stile sincero. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
