Con The Order of Time (del 2017), il talento di Valerie June non è passato inosservato, ancor di più che su Pushin' Against a Stone (del 2013), prodotto da Dan Auerbach dei Black Keys. Nel marzo del 2021, ritroviamo la calda voce blues-folk-soul-jazz-country della cantante del Tennessee con sede a Brooklyn, stavolta in un ambiente più lussureggiante. Co-prodotto da lei e Jack Splash, The Moon And Stars: Prescriptions For Dreamers doveva uscire all'inizio del 2020 ma la sua etichetta ha preferito tenerlo in stand-by per un anno, a causa della pandemia... Questo album è probabilmente quello che più le assomiglia. Valerie June è un’artista piuttosto singolare, con le sue dualità: città/campagna e spiritualità/pragmatismo. Sa padroneggiare i classici americani come il blues del Delta o il country degli Appalachi - pur rimanendo spettatrice del mondo in cui vive e delle sue immoralità - con la stessa naturalezza con la quale lei riesce a passare da una chitarra acustica a un synth: in uno schiocco di dita. Utilizzando questo stile personale che lei chiama organic moonshine roots music, stavolta mette da parte un certo tipo di groove e avvolge le sue canzoni in un alone sognante, spesso malinconico (come su Colors) o addirittura crea delle grandi messe soul che flirtano con il gospel (come su Call Me A Fool, con Carla Thomas come guest). Come Brittany Howard degli Alabama Shakes o alla maniera di Van Morrison in Astral Weeks, Valerie June non si limita mai a uno stile. È lei stessa uno stile! E si lascia ispirare da tutte le idee e gli stati d'animo. Ad esempio, contemporaneamente all'uscita di questo album, ha pubblicato un libro di poesie, disegni e omelie (Maps for the Modern World, Andrews McMeel Publishing). E per creare la strumentale Starlight Ethereal Silence ha registrato il canto degli uccelli nella casa della sua famiglia a Humboldt, Tennessee, mescolandolo poi con i suoni delle ciotole tibetane.
