Fireworks were formed by Matthew, the founder of popular London indie disco night Big Pink Cake, after his friends told him to stop singing melodies to them over the phone and just form a band already. He roped in his pals (including vocalist Emma from the Pocketbooks) and began writing songs in earnest. This self-titled EP is the first transmission from Fireworks and it sticks pretty close to the noise pop formula first begun back in 1986 by bands like the Shop Assistants: take a pretty melody and some wistful words, sing them in a fragile, heartfelt croon, and then dump a bucketful of fuzzy, fizzy guitars on top. The first three songs make a happy, noisy sound not far from "Paint a Rainbow"-era My Bloody Valentine, with Matthew's voice battling feedbacking guitars on "Higher and Higher" and Emma getting the best of the noise on "All the Things That You Said." The last song throws a bit of a curve ball -- unless you know where the name for Matthew's club night originated -- with a quiet acoustic ballad that sounds a lot like the Field Mice or the Razorcuts. It doesn't work as well as the uptempo tracks, but it shows some nice variety that bodes well for future records. This EP shows that Matthew's friends were right and anyone who likes noisy indie pop should be glad they gave him the boost he needed.
