Daughter have returned with their first studio album in seven years. Stereo Mind Game marks a new chapter for the trio, showcasing their evolution as musicians while still staying true to their roots. The album is a reflection of the personal and world activities that have affected the group in that time, including relocating to different cities, pursuing solo projects and the pandemic.
From the start, we are plunged into Daughter's unique sound world; you'll be taken on the same journey the band has been through since their last release. Elena Tonra's hushed vocals are accompanied by clear guitars, subtle string arrangements and electronic moments that increase in intensity. The somber tracks opening the album up to "Dandelion" take us back to Daughter's beginnings, but the unusual song structure and Tonra's high-register vocals on "Neptune" lead us in a new optimistic direction, which progressively takes us from the dark into the light. "Swim Back" is frantic and different from the Daughter that most people know, "Future Lover" is bathed in distorted guitars and a pulsing drumbeat and "(Missed Calls)" provides a brief respite from the chaotic middle tracks with a sense of wistful reflection.
As the album closes with the melancholic "Wish I Could Cross the Sea," the vocals are drowned out in a sea of ambient strings, electronics and disembodied voices. Daughter's style remains intact while elevating their production and modernizing their music. It's clear their influence on the indie-music sphere has been significant since their start in 2010, and Stereo Mind Game will only add to that.
