È sempre un po’ la prova del fuoco. Non si tratta di un passaggio obbligato ma di un modo per confrontarsi con i propri colleghi di ieri e di oggi. Con Standards, suo decimo album in studio dal titolo eloquente, Seal scala l’Everest dei grandi classici del jazz e dello swing. Sono trent’anni ormai che il britannico non ha più molto da dimostrare in quanto alle tonalità spiccatamente soul della sua voce. Ma questa lieta parentesi dal gusto retrò permette di ricordare come quest’organo potente e sensuale possa domare qualunque repertorio. Registrato prevalentemente nei famosi Capitol Studios di Los Angeles, là dove Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat “King” Cole e tanti altri incisero alcuni dei loro più grandi dischi, Standards ha goduto per l’appunto dell’aiuto di musicisti che un tempo affiancarono quelle grandi voci. Si ritroverà dunque il pianista Randy Waldman (Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka), il bassista Chuck Berghofer (Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles) e il batterista Greg Fields (Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder), tutti riuniti affinché Seal partorisca le sue rivisitazioni di Autumn Leaves, I Put A Spell On You, Love For Sale, My Funny Valentine, I've Got You Under My Skin, Smile, I'm Beginning To See The Light o ancora Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow. «È l’album che ho sempre voluto fare, sottolinea l’interessato. Sono cresciuto ascoltando la musica dell’epoca del Rat Pack e ho sempre sognato di registrare quelle canzoni atemporali. Lavorare con i musicisti che affiancarono Frank Sinatra e molti dei miei artisti preferiti, in quegli stessi studi in cui si produsse la magia per la prima volta, è stato per me un vero onore. È sempre un po’ la prova del fuoco. Non si tratta di un passaggio obbligato ma di un modo per confrontarsi con i propri colleghi di ieri e di oggi. Con Standards, suo decimo album in studio dal titolo eloquente, Seal scala l’Everest dei grandi classici del jazz e dello swing. Sono trent’anni ormai che il britannico non ha più molto da dimostrare in quanto alle tonalità spiccatamente soul della sua voce. Ma questa lieta parentesi dal gusto retrò permette di ricordare come quest’organo potente e sensuale possa domare qualunque repertorio. Registrato prevalentemente nei famosi Capitol Studios di Los Angeles, là dove Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat “King” Cole e tanti altri incisero alcuni dei loro più grandi dischi, Standards ha goduto per l’appunto dell’aiuto di musicisti che un tempo affiancarono quelle grandi voci.
