Quest’album sarebbe forse il laboratorio della colonna sonora di un prossimo film? Oppure, secondo un’espressione ormai in uso, una «colonna sonora immaginaria»? Perché per il loro quinto album i membri dei Cage The Elephant hanno scelto un approccio molto cinematografico. Social Cues è stato concepito nel momento in cui il leader del gruppo, Matt Shultz, stava vivendo la fine di una storia d’amore. È dunque in uno slancio catartico che sono state composte queste canzoni, e l’estetica dei film horror di John Carpenter è stata scelta per tradurre questo amore che si attenua. Registrato a Nashville e Los Angeles, l’album del sestetto americano descrive un paesaggio interiore cupo, che si riflette in un piccolo gioiello come Goodbye, nel quale una formazione classica (in particolare pianoforte e archi) si unisce agli strumenti pop rock.
L’altra sorpresa dell’album, è il duetto con Beck, Night Running, nel quale una tinta dub affianca chitarre rock. Oltre a Carpenter, Shultz sarebbe stato profondamente influenzato da Fassbinder al momento della scrittura di Social Cues. La forza emotiva dei film di questi due registi si sente nelle canzoni dove prevale una certa durezza (Ready to Let Go, House of Glass, Tokyo Smoke, e soprattutto Broken Boy e la sua ritmica deleteria…), mentre Skin and Bones e Love’s the Only Way lasciano intravedere un po’di speranza in questo quadro in parte orrifico e in parte depressivo. Con influenze di un altro tipo, si distingue l’omaggio a Ashes to Ashes di David Bowie nel ritornello della canzone che ha dato il titolo all’album.
