In una band, così come in una coppia, il segreto della durata è sapersi prendere del tempo per sé. E questo vale anche per i The National, più di 20 anni di esistenza, e un cantante, Matt Berninger, che si offre la sua prima evasione sotto il suo nome. Senza la sua band sì, ma non da solo. Una dozzina di musicisti hanno partecipato alla creazione dell’album Serpentine Prison, tra cui Gail Ann Dorsey (fedele ex bassista di Bowie, tra gli altri), Mickey Raphael (il suonatore di armonica preferito da Willie Nelson), Andrew Bird, e anche tre membri dei The National. E l’album è prodotto dal leggendario Booker T. Jones, che suona anche le tastiere. Questo cast deluxe non vuole creare un album blockbuster. È più una certa modestia che lo caratterizza. Meno rock che con The National, Berninger scolpisce sonorità acustiche nella la vena di questo genere che gli anglosassoni chiamano “singer-songwriter”, un cantautorato venato di folk e country, dove i testi sono importanti quanto la musica. E in questa ottica, si può ascoltare questo album come la colonna sonora di un viaggio nel cuore della notte, con momenti di estasi, di sogni ad occhi aperti e anche di relax. Con la sua voce bassa e l’accompagnamento elegantemente minimale (pianoforte, chitarre, fiati soft), Matt Berninger segue la strada percorsa da Nick Cave o Leonard Cohen - questi crooner del crepuscolo - senza paura, né di andare in panne né di schiacciare sull’acceleratore. Con la sua produzione calda, Serpentine Prison immerge l’ascoltatore nelle delizie del torpore autunnale.
