Despite his acclaim as an introspective and thoughtful musician and the skillful confidence with which he performed, pianist Artur Schnabel was surprisingly uncomfortable with the recording studio, as well as the public stage. Yet his surviving recordings of both solo and chamber works are some of the most exceptional in the historical recording repertoire. Equally significant from both historical and musical standpoints is the Pro Arte Quartet, whose 28-year career marked one of the first long-standing ensembles of its kind. Both Schnabel and the Pro Arte Quartet were (and still are) known more for their sensitive interpretation of music than flashy displays of virtuosity. As such, this restored recording of the Schumann and Dvorák piano quintets is a valuable addition to the libraries of historical collectors and neophyte aficionados as well. Originally recorded in 1934, this digital remastering is rather exceptional. Almost completely free from hiss, the restored sound is quite full and well-balanced -- something not always achieved with monaural recordings. The interpretations heard in the performances themselves have withstood the test of time as well. The dirge from the Schumann quintet is remarkably reserved in tempo while still maintaining the feeling of a march. The Dvorák Scherzo, while a little thin sounding to modern ears, is nonetheless a testament to the skill and exceptional technique of string players and pianists alike.
