The cover to Katy J Pearson’s debut album is rather kitsch. The colours, the font, the portrait in locket frame, the Tyrol or Moldavian folkloric attire… Where and when does Katy J Pearson come from? You may be surprised to know that she was born in England only 24 year ago. But, at heart, Katy is from a time long before her birth. It’s as if a long time ago Katy left the English coasts in search of good fortune on the other side of the Atlantic, making a home for herself in a little house on the prairie… In truth, Katy J Pearson lives in Bristol. That’s Bristol in England, not Tennessee. And like a lot of English musicians before her, she draws much inspiration from the States. From country to folk to Dolly Parton. But she also pays tribute to one of the greatest singers ever to emerge from England: Kate Bush. Her voice is light but never flat, thrill seeking as it rises and falls with her pop style and memorable choruses. Recorded with her band, almost all the songs follow the same model: they all start soft, then swell into catchy arrangements that continue until the end. The chords are early Velvet Underground, the bright melodies remind one of 90s feminine indie rock. Her influences are historic, often classic folk-rock, but it’s all about renewal in Katy J Pearson’s songs and you’ll be whistling them through to Spring. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
