It’s great to see Paul Wranitzky being reinstated as a leading composer of the classical period. Ironically, the Moravian musician gradually moved into the shadow of Mozart or Haydn while still maintaining close ties with them. His opera Obéron inspired The Magic Flute two years later, and he conducted the first performance of Haydn’s The Creation.

Born in 1756, the same year as Mozart, Wranitzky moved to Vienna at the age of 20, where he began to make a name for himself. Eventually, his music began to reflect the political upheavals of his time, and most of the works in this programme are connected to a major historical event in one way or another.

His Symphony in C Minor, Op. 31 subtitled “Grande Sinfonie caractéristique pour la paix avec la République française”, adopts a march tempo in several of its movements (“tempo di marcia”, “marche funèbre”, “tempo di marcia movibile”), giving a real sense of heroism to the entire work. With a more jubilant tone, Symphony in D major, Op. 36 is inspired by the wedding of Archduke Joseph of Austria and Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna of Russia. The inspiration behind Symphony in D Minor, Op. 31 is more difficult to trace. A composite work, it was released later and relatively little played. It’s now known that the drama Die Rache comprises three movements of the symphony, which has been diluted with additional extracts.

Bernhard Forck, an advocate for the ‘historically informed interpretation’, offers an energetic and enthusiastic version here, and the period instruments of the Akademie für Alte Musik offer incredible colour to this work. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
