Obviously, “ovviamente”: è con la prima parola del primo brano che i bostoniani dei Lake Street Dive hanno scelto di intitolare il loro settimo album, il terzo sulla prestigiosa etichetta Nonesuch. Fin dai loro esordi, Rachael Price, Mike “McDuck” Olson, Bridget Kearney, Mike Calabrese e Akie Bermiss amano mescolare i generi senza preoccuparsi troppo delle varie etichette contemporanee, come blue-eyed soul, indie-pop, art-country o pop-folk... Preferiscono seguire i loro istinti e le loro ispirazioni, passando dal jazz classico al soul e al rock'n'roll degli anni '60, con un'ammirazione incondizionata soprattutto per i Beatles, ma anche per i Drifters, i Fleetwood Mac o i Jackson 5. Perciò, l'unica etichetta che può essere attribuita ai Lake Street Dive è l'amore incondizionato per una musica più artigianale, basata su strumenti reali piuttosto che su campioni, loop e software, ora diventati la norma nella musica popolare. Hypotheticals è una ballata vivace che sbuca direttamente dagli anni '70. Un dolce sensazione vintage che continua in modalità funk con Hush Money e le nove tracce seguenti... Con Obviously, siamo in un Ritorno Al Futuro musicale, allegro, che non manca di ironia e soprattutto accompagnato da un immancabile ottimismo, lontano dalla negatività di questi tempi. E questa discrepanza che i Lake Street Dive coltivano è molto salutare anche per noi. In ogni caso, Rachael Price non si è scordata delle lotte di oggi: su Being a Woman, canta “If I complain they’ll blame my feelings / But look at the view from my glass ceiling” (“Se mi lamento daranno la colpa ai miei sentimenti / Ma guarda che vista dal mio soffitto di vetro”). Un'altra lotta è quella ecologista, su Making Do osserva lo stato attuale del pianeta: “What do I say to my baby girl? / Leaving her with a half a world?” (“Cosa posso dire alla mia bambina? / Lasciarla con un mondo a metà?”). Un altro dettaglio da sottolineare è la presenza di Mike Elizondo come produttore. Un uomo che resta nell'ombra, ma di cui è stato facile incrociare il nome per vent'anni, accanto ai soliti sospetti: Dr Dre, Eminem, Carrie Underwood o Fiona Apple.
