Un’occhiatina rapida alla copertina di Nobody Told Me basta per immaginare subito ciò che verrà fuori dalle casse. Il capo, John Mayall, a 85 anni, ci ha messo i nomi dei suoi prestigiosi invitati: Joe Bonamassa, Larry McCray, Todd Rundgren, “Little Steven” Van Zandt della E Street Band di Springsteen, Alex Lifeson di Rush e Carolyn Wonderland. Senza alcuna sorpresa, si tratta in questo caso di un buon vecchio blues elettrico che il fondatore dei Bluesbreakers maneggia come nessun altro dai primi anni ’60. Affiancato da una solida formazione composta dal bassista Greg Rzab, dal batterista Jay Davenport, dal chitarrista ritmico Billy Watts e dai componenti della sessione ottoni del gruppo del Late Show di Conan O’Brien, il padre del british blues dimostra di saper ancora cantare e addirittura suonare l’armonica. Ovviamente, l’età dell’oro di Mayall è ormai lontana e Nobody Told Me non rivoluziona assolutamente nessun genere. Ma tanto il livello musicale quanto la sincerità dei protagonisti è tale che ci si lascia facilmente trasportare da questa imbardata di blues classico piacevole come una buona serata tra vecchi amici… © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz
