Cinque anni e tre settimane, “one-thousand eight-hundred and fifty-five days”. È il periodo che intercorre tra gli album DAMN. e Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers di Kendrick Lamar. È difficile pensare che il ritorno del più grande rapper della sua epoca potesse avvenire in modo semplice. Questo quinto album è straordinariamente intenso, sia nei contenuti che nella forma. La produzione, profondamente impregnata del sound di Sounwave, è audace, versatile, molto più complessa e sperimentale rispetto agli album precedenti. Il californiano ha deciso di approfondire gli stati d’animo personali che ha iniziato ad esplorare con DAMN. e di collegarli alla storia oscura degli USA espressa in To Pimp A Butterfly. È un processo di pensiero lineare quello che accompagna alcuni momenti di grande interpretazione, come il duetto con Taylour Paige, We Cry Together, un violento, espressivo e partecipato litigio di coppia; o come la melodica Puple Hearts con Summer Walker e Ghostface Killah; o ancora come la pacata, intima lettura del diario di sua zia su Auntie Diaries... Nessun artista della TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) è presente in questo album. Kendrick Lamar ha preferito lasciare spazio soprattutto al suo pupillo Baby Keem e a Kodak Black. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers è un album tentacolare, ben al di sopra della mischia. Cinque anni e tre settimane, “one-thousand eight-hundred and fifty-five days”. È il periodo che intercorre tra gli album DAMN. e Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers di Kendrick Lamar. È difficile pensare che il ritorno del più grande rapper della sua epoca potesse avvenire in modo semplice. Questo quinto album è straordinariamente intenso, sia nei contenuti che nella forma. Porta con sé le elevazioni spirituali del suo autore, la complessità dell’America e ciò che implica essere neri e iconici negli Stati Uniti. La produzione, profondamente impregnata del sound di Sounwave, è audace, versatile, molto più complessa e sperimentale rispetto agli album precedenti. Il californiano ha deciso di approfondire gli stati d’animo personali che ha iniziato ad esplorare con DAMN. e di collegarli alla storia oscura degli USA espressa in To Pimp A Butterfly. È un processo di pensiero lineare quello che accompagna alcuni momenti di grande interpretazione, come il duetto con Taylour Paige, We Cry Together, un violento, espressivo e partecipato litigio di coppia; o come la melodica Puple Hearts con Summer Walker e Ghostface Killah; o ancora come la pacata, intima lettura del diario di sua zia su Auntie Diaries... Nessun artista della TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) è presente in questo album. Kendrick Lamar ha preferito lasciare spazio soprattutto al suo pupillo Baby Keem e a Kodak Black. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers è un album tentacolare, ben al di sopra della mischia.
