Diretto dal capo di Monaco Frank Strobel (che ha anche supervisionato il mixaggio), la nuova registrazione della colonna sonora di Metropolis avviene in occasione del rifacimento di questo classico di Fritz Lang, 83 anni dopo la sua uscita. Nel 1927 il compositore Gottfried Huppertz (1887-1937) è già esperto di cinema. A lui dobbiamo, in particolare, la musica dei Nibelungen dello stesso Fritz Lang, nel 1924. Grazie a Metropolis, contribuisce a dare la proprio consacrazione alla musica da film, un “genere” ancora agli albori a quel tempo. Oltre alla precisione con cui questa partizione è stata scritta in rapporto alle immagini che descrivono una città futurista, ritroviamo molteplici punti fondamentali che rappresenteranno i bei temp di una certa estetica della musica da film, in Germania, ma anche a Hollywood. Innanzitutto, è composta da uno spirito musicale epico e neo-romantico; in secondo luogo include diversi leitmotiv che descrivono, allo stesso tempo, i personaggi e i temi del film (amore, ribellione, ecc.); infine, a dispetto del classicismo generale, la partizione di Huppertz è anche una musica del suo tempo, il quale non esita a ricorrere a delle armonie jazz e a dei ritmi sincopati. Ritroviamo quindi tutti gli elementi che saranno presenti in numerose produzioni cinematografiche a venire, compresa la saga di Star Wars! ©NM/Qobuz
