This is the second release devoted to Matthew Locke by the viol consort Phantasm; both are excellent. Locke, from the generation before Henry Purcell in England, is not exactly a household name. He is one of those radicals that populate music history, from the 14th century ars subtilior in France on down. Locke's consort polyphony is full of unexpected turns of melody and rhythm, and, most strikingly, splashes of fairly extreme chromaticism. A good performance, like the present one, will neither lean into these nor skate by them. Phantasm and its director, treble viol player Laurence Dreyfus, cultivate a clean sound that lets the music speak for itself and lets a considerable interiority grow as the album proceeds. Phantasm completes the set of "Flat Consorts" from the group's earlier album, so called apparently because they lead with what would soon be called minor-key sections and then segue into the major. The group adds pieces for the "Little Consort," which are generally simpler. Overall, the performance draws the listener into Locke's style, which Purcell would have known well, and the Linn label's church sound adds a bright tang. Highly recommended for those with any degree of enthusiasm for 17th century English music.
